  • A psalm a day keeps…

    by Claire van Ryn

We were like marbles rolling around in a bowl. All around us, 360-degrees, mountains loomed in colours rich, dark and earthy. As the sun rose above the horizon’s lip, shadows began pouring like ink into the crevasses. Hubby Phill and I were at Lees Paddocks in Tassie’s highlands, having hiked in the afternoon before and set up our squeezy two-man tent beside the rickety...

  • God spoke to me this morning

    by Claire van Ryn

I woke up with swallows flying around in my head. How do I explain the significance of these beautifully common creatures of the sky, and why my spirit is so stirred when I see them?

  • Come to the book launch. Yes, you!

    by Claire van Ryn

Hi, ho! I’ve been a bit quiet on the blog front. Apart from the #caravanryn travel updates of course. Wanna know why? Because I’m planning a book launch. I’ve never done one of these before and it turns out there’s lots of itty bitty logistical things one must throw energy at. One such thing is inviting people to attend. Which I’ve done. But I...

  • Oprah would’ve been proud! FLaM advanced release.

    by Claire van Ryn

FLaM is in print! And some of you are like, DUH! I have been busting to give you un update on the progress of FLaM, and now, finally, I can. Because on Saturday, after a full day of stuffy airports making the trip home to Launceston from sunny Cairns, I did a sneaky advanced and exclusive book launch to all the 400 women who attended...

  • “I am the bread of life,” he said as I pulled a loaf from the oven.

    by Claire van Ryn

I reach to the top shelf of the fridge and grasp the jar, carry it to the bench and twist open the lid. There it is. Barely half a cup of viscous, off-white matter. I heave the flour bag to the benchtop and open its mouth, loosely fastened with a wooden clothes peg, to measure an equal amount into the jar. White particles fly...

  • When I get sick of writing. And clouds.

    by Claire van Ryn

Writing is my job. I’m the editor of a street magazine, which means I write lots of interesting stories about Tasmania – and edit many others. I’m communications specialist for a not-for-profit organisation, which means I write topic-specific content for blog and social media. I also freelance for a handful of clients, which means I write to convey brand messages and other such stuff....

  • “I collapsed and died in the hospital ward”

    by Claire van Ryn

This article is part of the #flamfaces series. Here, Noel Towns of Launceston shares a snippet of his story. I put my faith in Christ at the very young age of eight years and have felt His guidance throughout my journey, maintaining regular times of Bible reading and prayer. I have wrestled with the challenges and tensions between my faith and real world experience in both personal...

  • “I was pregnant with our 3rd child when my husband died”

    by Claire van Ryn

This article is part of the #flamfaces series. Here, Melissa Lubke of Launceston shares a snippet of her story. I was 11 weeks pregnant with our third child when my husband died. I drove to the church barbecue down the road, while Andrew rode his motorbike shortly after. Half an hour passed, mingling with people, and a friend said, “Where’s Andrew?” Then it clicked. Where’s Andrew? What are...

I am a writer, mother, wife and believer in a reality bigger than my own. I love exploring the small epiphanies of life. Nothing is humdrum. Every moment is charged with opportunity, each one mixing its ideas with the ink in my pen. You call it alchemy, I call it God.

It’s Epilepsy Awareness Month. I’ve been unsure whether I should share anything, but then someone close to me was belittled and teased because of his experience with epilepsy and I realised that there actually is still a stigma around it. So, if you’re interested, here’s my epilepsy story.
