One of the hardest things about maintaining a strong faith in God is keeping our nose in the Word. Does anyone else struggle to snatch a few minutes each day to read and pray?
Yet when I do spend time with God – I prefer mornings – the day is charged with a different kind of je ne sais quoi. Energy? Attitude? Benevolence? The day has foundation and it seems that no matter what populates those 24 hours, I have my head and my heart in the right place to deal with it.
1 Peter 1:23 says this:
“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,
through the living and enduring word of God.”
It’s a beautiful verse – one that you could read a million times and still find new meanings. What I take from it is the ability God’s word, the Bible, has to restore. We can be “born again” daily, cleansed and revitalised, if we will only spend a little time reading.
Which brings me to a great thing happening at the Bible Society right now. Live Light in 25 Words is a campaign designed to help people start a Bible reading habit. It asks people to commit to reading just 25 words of scripture, perhaps with one of their specially designed study guides, for 31 days. Or you can read the bible with one of a rabble of Christian leaders and personalities from around Australia (er, I’m one of them – you’ll see my mug on the website). There’s also a handful of Good Book Talks from some super inspiring people.
There’s all sorts of ways to do it too. The old-fashioned paper way (print out the guides and use your bible), online, with your smartphone, vimeo clips etc. And you don’t have to do it by yourself either – there’s options for individuals, groups, friends, families and leaders.
The society has left us no choice BUT to get our nose in the Word!
The campaign starts proper in October, but you can sign up now so that you’re ready and, if you’re anything like me, so you don’t forget about it.
I hope you’ll support this campaign with me, and start a habit. A good, God habit guaranteed to set your faith on fire.
